Investigating what happens to the power factor and apparent power of an LED light bulb as it is dimmed. I found that the apparent power of an LED bulb does not necessarily decrease as the bulb is dimmed. In the case of several of these bulbs, the apparent power actually increased as the bulb was dimmed. What this means is that it may be more efficient to run certain LED bulbs at full brightness rather than dimmed. If your house has a “smart meter” that takes power factor into consideration, then these high-tech LED light bulbs won’t be saving you as much as they claim on the packaging. This toy has been inspired by Youtube users “lidmotor” and “smartcreatinos2010″ and others. The basic electronic circuit is adopted by solarbotics toy “solar pendulum”. But there were made some improvements around this. The toy consists from following parts: a) Homemade DIY solar panels from solar cuts b) big capacitor 4 Farads / 5.5 Volts unit (Golden CAP) c) constant current source 0.5 mili Ampers d) self starting, synchronised low frequency oscillator e) many turns of wire inductance (coil) f) repulsing the neodym magnet pendulum How does it works: Early morning after sunrise daylight produces only small (cca 1 – 2 mA) current in solar panels. Whole this current “flows” into big capactior unit. But the voltage on big capacitor unit is not enough to start oscillator and the big capacitor unit is slowly filling by this current. It lasts approx 2 hours. When the voltage on big capacitor unit is above 1.7 Volts, the constant current source allows to supply 0.5 mA to oscillator. Oscillator (with period of 9 seconds) switches on/off the inductance (coil) and the neodym magnet on pendulum is “pushed” and pendulum starts to move.
